Juniperus virginiana
Tough, adaptable native juniper that tolerates poor soil, drought, and wind better than almost any other conifer.
Extremely low maintenance once established. Avoid planting near apple/crabapple trees — alternate host for cedar-apple rust.
Mildly toxic to cats and dogs in large quantities (essential oils) — occasional browsing is low risk, but keep pets from chewing foliage regularly.
