A simple guide to using butterworts in your houseplant collection.

If you’ve ever spent a few minutes inspecting your houseplants and noticed tiny, dancing black specks hovering around the soil surface or flying near the foliage, you know exactly what they are: fungus gnats. They aren't just a nuisance; they represent a persistent cycle of life in your indoor garden. The real problem isn't actually the adult flies—which are mostly there to breed and move on—it’s the larvae. These tiny grubs live deep in the damp, organic-rich soil where your plant roots sit. They feed on decaying matter and, occasionally, can nibble at the fine root hairs of your larger plants.
I remember spending months trying to "kill" them by spraying whatever I could find onto the top inch of dirt. It didn't work because I was only hitting the adults. The larvae remained tucked away in the moisture where they were safe and happy. To get rid of fungus gnats, you have to address why they are thriving in your pots in the first place. They thrive on consistent dampness, and unless that environment changes, they will keep hatching every time a new batch matures.
The most common mistake I see folks make is treating fungus gnats like an external pest—something that "landed" on the plant from outside. In reality, the presence of these gnats is usually a symptom of a soil condition issue. If you have gnats in your houseplant collection, it’s almost always because the soil stays too wet for too long between waterings.
When the surface layer dries out but the bottom remains consistently soggy, you create a perfect nursery for them to thrive. Many people try to fix this by adding "more" treatment—spraying more neem oil or dumping in more sulfur. But those are just band-aids on a structural problem. The actual fix is managing the moisture deep down. You need to move away from the "soak it until it runs out the bottom every three days" method and toward a system where the soil dries out sufficiently between waterings so that the larvae can't survive in those lower layers. If you don't change the environment of the root zone, no amount of surface treatment will break their cycle permanently.
This is where butterworts (specifically Pinguicula species) come into play as a "living" solution. They are carnivorous plants that have evolved in nutrient-poor bogs and alpine environments. Because they don't get enough nutrients from the soil, they’ve developed sticky leaves to trap and digest tiny insects.
When you are looking for these specifically for pest control, it is important to know which types actually work best as "trap plants" in a home environment. You want something hardy that can handle the specific conditions of your windowsill or indoor shelf. There's a big difference between some wild alpine varieties and the more common tropical butterworts. For most houseplant owners, I recommend sticking with tropical-leaning varieties because they are generally easier to keep happy indoors without needing specialized humidity controls.

They don't just look interesting; they are effective because their foliage produces a sticky substance (mucilage) that acts like flypaper. When a gnat or whitefly lands on them, they get stuck and can't move. It’s an elegant way to remove pests without spraying chemicals into your living space.
You can’t just take a standard butterwort from a nursery and stick it in a regular potting mix; it won't work that way. Standard potting soil is often too rich in nutrients (fertilizer) for them. They are adapted to "hungry" soil. To get this system working, you need to give the butterworts their own dedicated space with specific conditions:
By giving them their own pot and a "lean" home, they will thrive as healthy traps while your main plants stay in the soil you prefer to use for them. It creates a two-zone system: one zone is where your primary plants live (the high-nutrient zone), and the other is the "trap zone" where the butterworts sit nearby to catch whatever pests are wandering around the room or landing on leaves.
Once you have these butterworts established, they act as a passive defense system. They don't actively hunt; they simply wait for the insects to land. Because gnats and whiteflies are constantly moving looking for moisture or food, they will eventually encounter the sticky leaves of the butterworts.
The "sticky" part is key. This mucilage isn't just a bit tacky—it’s designed to trap small insects instantly. Once a gnat lands on it, it gets stuck and dies, becoming a tiny source of nutrients for the plant. To keep this system effective:
While the butterworts are your primary "trap" system, you can make their job easier by making the rest of your garden less hospitable for pests. You don't need a complex chemical regime; just some common-sense barriers will do.
One very simple trick I’ve found useful is using cinnamon on the surface of your main plant pots. Cinnamon acts as a natural drying agent and can help discourage gnats from laying eggs in the top layer of soil, while also making it less appealing for them to linger there. It's an old-fashioned trick that actually works because it changes the chemistry of the top inch of dirt just enough to make it "unfriendly" to larvae.
Additionally, if you have a particularly large infestation of whiteflies, adding some physical barriers—like a fine mesh over certain areas or simply moving your plants further apart so they aren't in a continuous "highway" for bugs to travel—can help. The goal is to make the butterworts the most attractive place for a bug to land while making the rest of the environment less of an easy home for them. By combining these two methods, you create a manageable system that works with nature instead of just fighting it with chemicals every week.
